Thursday 21st April saw the 4th in our series of “Leaders Dinners” in conjunction with the British Irish Chamber of Commerce. We had the pleasure of having Sean Barrett TD as our guest speaker.
The invited guests were treated to a most interesting and informative presentation by Sean covering his indirect introduction to Politics, (hooked on a golf course no less!) and through his early business career to his roles as Government chief whip, Government Minister and most recently as Ceann Comhairle of the 31st Dail.Feedback after the event from the guests was surprise at the extent of responsibilities resting with the Ceann Comhairle other than keeping an unruly house in order…and some unspecified members too!
Chairing the Committee on Procedures and Privilege, and the All-party Joint Committee on Climate Change and Energy threw up a most interesting aspect of his time in the Dail to date. This, and his Experience as Minister of Defence on how well we as a Nation, and especially our troops, are regarded as peacekeepers internationally was wonderful to hear about. One of our English guests who flew in for the evening commented “ Sean Barrett is a true inspiration and it was a pleasure to meet him. His quiet, modest persona and very considered approach to getting the best outcomes for the people through politics was a breath of fresh air compared with the many whose focus is toward re-election rather than service. I could have listened to his stories all evening. “
The Q and A session after dinner was excellent, unfortunately as Chatham House rules apply, you would have to have been there!
We are most grateful to Sean for sharing his time with us and a donation to his charity of choice was made in appreciation.
