The sixth in our Leaders Dinner Series with the British Irish Chamber of Commerce took place on Thursday 26th January in the RDS Member’s Club.
Twenty-eight invited guests joined us to hear Jim Breslin, Secretary General of the Department of Health, share interesting insights about his career to date and current challenges he faces in the Irish health care system.
Jim shared his unique perspective as someone who has experience of working both inside and outside the Civil Service. Notable career achievements include the establishment of the Department of Children and Youth Affairs and TUSLA, and considerable senior management experience across multiple government departments and the health service.
Following dinner, Jim took a Q&A session under “Chatham House” rules that covered a wide range of topics, including some rarely discussed topics. This included positive Irish health stories in the areas of overall life expectancy improvement and particular progress in cancer and cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment.
The current issues facing the health sector in Ireland and the impact of Brexit were discussed in an open and frank manner.
In appreciation of Jim sharing his time with us, Pathfinder and the British Irish Chamber of Commerce have made a donation to Jim’s chosen charity, The Peter McVerry Trust.
