Thursday 5th of November saw the First of our “Leaders Dinners” in conjunction with the British Irish Chamber of Commerce. The invitation event was held in the RDS Members club for a limited guest list of 32 Leaders in Business.

The guest Speaker was Howard Millar.

Howard served almost 23 years with Ryanair as part of the leadership team that transformed Ryanair from, a small loss making regional carrier, to Europe’s largest and most profitable airline carrying in excess of 100m passengers per annum. Howard served as Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Financial Officer until he stepped down in December 2014. He remains on the Board of Ryanair and is a Non- Executive Director of Ryanair Holdings plc and Applegreen plc.

Although the event was held under “Chatham House Rules” we can share a brief insight into the evening. Howard provided a most interesting, thoughtful and honest summary of the journey that Ryanair has made to become the most successful Airline in Europe. His insight and strategic approach over those early years in driving out cost whilst disrupting the significant status quo in the industry. He detailed how the recent strategic directional changes will assist in driving the airline to the next level of growth and his insight into the industry was appreciated by all present. He finished by giving his personal views on a potential British exit from Europe and the possible effects on the Airline industry and on what might happen post the UK EU referendum next year.

Following dinner, Howard took questions from the guests and it was apparent that we would have needed more time such was the interest in his views and business approach to Ryanair.

Events only concluded when, as MC, I informed the assembled guests that Howard and I had shared a conference platform some 15 years previously. That day Howard covered the growth of fledgling “Ryanair” and my subject was “The relevance of fixed and variable costing in a multinational companies”. As our Guests had heard the Ryanair story, I offered to share my topic at 9pm. Following a sudden exodus I was left alone…

Many thanks again to Howard!
